ISLAMABAD-Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that ISI and Pakistan Army are backing the democratic government and there exist no differences between them and the government. Premier Gilani was talking to media persons after addressing 24th Annual General Meeting and conference of the Pakistan Society of Development Economists here on Tuesday. The prime minister was of the view that all the institutions were working and performing their duties in an amicable manner. He further said that the government was determined to root out terrorism from society with the active support of the people, civil society and media. He said that the country was facing internal and external challenges due to this scourge and it was the responsibility of the international community to help Pakistan overcome this menace as stable Pakistan was in the interest of the whole world. He paid rich tributes to the police personnel who embraced Shahadat on Monday and said the government was working on enhancing capacity of the security personnel. He further said that besides the government would also enhance their pay and pensions along with introducing life insurance scheme. He said the international community should also come forward to enhance their capacity so that they could face this challenge with great courage. Regarding Punjab, the Prime Minister reiterated that the mandate of the majority party would be respected and said that PPP would sit on the opposition benches in the Punjab Assembly. He said he remained against the Governors Rule from the day one and the party should take notice against those who pushed the party to humiliation in the province. To another question Premier Gilani said that Parliamentary Committees to facilitate implementation of Charter of Democracy and Restoration of Constitution would undoubtedly be established soon. Commenting on new US policy on Afghanistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said Pakistan could not be compared with Afghanistan in any way as we are nuclear power, having independent judiciary and media besides a promising democracy thus comparing us with Afghanistan is unfair. He said Pakistan rendered matchless sacrifices in war against terror and its casualties are higher than the collective casualties of allied forces in Afghanistan therefore the US aid could not be linked with performance the country had rendered in rooting out this menace.
