Rawalpindi - A gang of unidentified armed robbers shot injured cashier of a bank branch located at Kallar Syedan and took away the cash in broad day light, sources told The Nation on Thursday.
The fleeing robbers also plucked out CCTV cameras of the bank, the sources added.
The injured cashier was moved to nearby hospital for treatment while a heavy contingent of police rushed to the crime scene and began investigation.
According to the sources, a gang of eight robbers riding on four bikes arrived at the bank branch at around 12:30 pm and overwhelmed the security guards. The robbers while brandishing weapons walked in the bank and made the entire staff and consumers hostage on gunpoint and asked the casher to hand the cash over to them.
The sources added that the robbers opened fire as the cashier showed resistance; resultantly, the cashier sustained bullet injury. The robbers collected Rs 3,91,000 and pulled out the CCTV cameras to destroy the evidence and fled on the motorcycles, the sources said.
Upon information, the police reached at the spot and recorded statements of the bank staff and eyewitnesses. The cashier was moved to a hospital, where a doctor told the media that his condition was out of danger after the doctors provided him with the treatment.
The sources said that a case was registered against the suspected robbers at Police Station Kallar Syedan. No senior police officer was available for his comments on the incident.
