LAHORE: Christian worshipers outside more than 100 churches, across the city of Lahore, presented flowers to police guards on Sunday at around 11am.

The main ceremony of this exercise was held at the Cathedral Church of Resurrection, opposite Lahore High Court. MNA Shaista Parvaiz Malik was the chief guest on the occasion. Bishop of Lahore Rt Rev Irfan Jamil and Dean of Lahore Cathedral Rev Shahid Mehraj were also present. The event was hosted by PML-N MPA Mary Gill to honour the service of thousands of policemen and officers who provide security to hundreds of churches every Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion Mary said every Sunday policemen stand guard outside churches in this hot summer while fasting during the holy month of Ramazan. “We should appreciate their service to the community. The largest number of the Christian community in Pakistan is concentrated in Lahore where their number is no less than 500,000 with 340,000 registered voters. Hence, providing safe environment for worship to this enormous size of the community in Lahore is praiseworthy.

“I also believe that this realization can bring the Christian community and Muslims closer at large in this ever increasingly hostile environment. We also recall how a policeman lost his life in Youhanabad tragedy. We also recall how the police force in May 2015, for the first time, took initiative to save the Christian neighbourhood in Dhoop Sarhi. Even DIG Dr. Arshaf Haidar got injured in that operation. We recognize and salute their efforts,” Mary said.
