NAB arrests customs official on corruption charges

PESHAWAR -  The National Accountability Bureau Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday arrested an appraiser of customs dry port, Peshawar for his alleged involvement in corruption and corrupt practices.

The arrested man, identified as Hidayatullah, was allegedly involved in corrupt practices and misuse of authority causing the loss of approximately Rs4,000 million to the national exchequer, sources said here.

During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that the accused as appraiser dry port in connivance with other persons planned to clear construction machinery illegally and in violation of applicable rules. However, their evil and nefarious designs were obstructed by a NAB investigation team. The accused persons, in connivance with each other, illegally cleared approximately 500 machines worth more than Rs 600 million as assessed by the department whereas the market value of the same machinery is more than Rs2, 800 million.

 In this way, so far colossal loss of more than Rs4,000 million has been caused to the government exchequer.

It merits mentioning here that two other accused persons, identified as Shahid Akbar, principal appraiser, and Abdul Hadi, appraiser customs dry port, Peshawar have already been arrested in the instant case.

The National Accountability Bureau KP office is vigorously pursuing the case. More disclosures are expected during the accused physical remand.

The accused will be produced before the Accountability Court for obtaining his physical custody.
