KARACHI – Killing of a cleric and seminary administrator ensued violent protest and damage of public property in Gulshan Town area of Karachi on Monday as 9 people shot dead in the city.Administrator of Ahsanul Uloom Maulana Mufti Muhammad Ismaeel, 42, was gunned down at Abu Al Hassan Ispahani Road.Police said that the victim was on his way to seminary in his car when unidentified assailants pumped bullets into the car, leaving him dead at the scene. The perpetrators ran away after committing the crime.Students of seminary rushed on the spot and took the body to their madrasa located near the crime scene. The body was later shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) for post-mortem. Students of various seminaries came on roads protesting and pelted stones at vehicles. The protesters damaged seventy vehicles, besides setting ablaze 6 more, including an ambulance in Gulshan Town. They destroyed a wine store located near Moti Mehel.Armed forces failed to control the situation. Witnesses said that the mob launched a baton attack on vehicles and people going on Abul Hassan Ispahani Road, Rashid Minhas Road, University Road, Disco Bakery, Maskan, Gulshan Chowrangi, Esa Nagri and other surrounding areas. Gulsan Town remained closed while traffic on the affected roads had been suspended for 10 hours. Six students of the same seminary were killed when they were sitting at a tea stall near their seminary. Funeral prayer for the deceased cleric was held at Madrasa Ashanul Uloom after Zohar prayer. Meanwhile, a MQM worker and his nephew were gunned down at Orangi Town.Police said that the victims, 42-year-old Mohammad Alam and his 26-year-old nephew Jaseem, were going on in a car when unidentified assailants intercepted it and shot them dead. Police shifted the bodies to JPMC for autopsy and later handed them over to their heirs. Police said that the victim Alam was a district officer of graveyard. Separately, two gunny bag bodies of MQM activists were found in precincts of Sachal Police Station.According to the police, victims were identified as Tayyab, 25, and Mehmood, 26. Police said that killers abducted the victims before killing them. The bodies were shifted to JPMC for autopsy and later handed over to the families. A police inspector Hidayat Ullah Abbasi was shot dead in Bilal Colony of Korangi Town when he was intercepted by unknown attackers. Another cop was shot dead by unknown gunmen outside his house in Frontier Colony.A man was shot dead near Habib Chorangi within the remits of SITE-A police station.Police said that the victim Usman, 32, was going to meet his uncle when unidentified perpetrators shot him dead. In another incident, a man was gunned down near Al-Asif Square.Police said that the victim, Ayub Khan, was drug peddler and enmity was the motive behind the killing.
