KARACHI - Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences Professor Dr Mohammed Saeed Quraishy said that according to modern concept disability is not a compulsion . Persons affected with disability can be made useful persons of our society by providing comfort to them. Many examples of this are present in the world.

DUHS has established ‘Institute of physical medicine and rehabilitation’ based on modern concepts which are currently the only civil institution of public sector in Pakistan.

He said this while talking to the participants of the walk held on the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons at Dow Ojha campus.

In addition to the participation of  persons with disabilities and their guardians, the head of Abdul Sattar Edhi foundation Faisal Edhi, Pro vice chancellor of DUHS Professor Masroor Khan and Medical Superintendent Dow Hospital Shuja Farukh have also present on the occasion.

Professor Dr Mohammed Saeed Quraishy further said that IPMNR from its establishment has benefited 270078 till now. Apart from Karachi and interior Sindh, affectees from Baluchistan and KPK also come here.

On this occasion, Faisal Edhi said that we have promised to eliminate polio and thalassemia from Pakistan. In our neighbourhood, Iran achieved the goal of eliminating thalassemia. He said that unfortunately in Pakistan work on the concept of making disabled persons useful has started with a lot of delay. In our country the recovery speed of disabled persons is slow. In such situation the efforts of DUHS are commendable.

Professor Masroor Khan said that 25 persons affected with disabilities including Helen Keller and Einstein has earned fame in the world; documentary films have also made on them. He said that with spread of awareness in Pakistan the concept regarding disability has already changed. On this occasion children affected with disabilities sang national songs.
