MIRPUR (AJK) - In Azad Jammu Kashmir an integrated drive has been launched in order to ensure safe and comfortable travelling facilities to the commuters by the public transport across the liberated territory. Disclosing this, official sources told this correspondent here that Special Mobile Traffic Squad headed by Secretary AJK Transport Authority Aftab Ahmed Mir, Chief Motor Vehicles Examiner Azad Kashmir and Secretary RTA Adil Mahmood Khan, Assistant Secretary AJK Transport Authority Siraj Uddin with the Divisional MVEs Syed Abdul Hameed Gardeizi and Abdul Hafeez Khan and the Traffic Police officers has been constituted to discourage the trend of overloading, overcharging and uncomfortably during journey on the part of the public transport owners. The Special Squad has started surprise checking of the public transport vehicles on the highways in all ten districts of AJK, the sources said. At the first leg of the campaign in Mirpur division comprising Mirpur, Bhimbher and Kotli districts, the Special Mobile Squad challaned series of public service vehicles including Toyota Hiace, passenger wagons for overloading and violating the repeated warnings about overloading besides other traffic rules and sent the cases to the Secretary Regional Transport Authority Mirpur for further necessary action. The sources said that extensive drive has been launched to get removed the extra seats from the public service vehicles including the 14-seater Toyota hiace four wagons in the wake of the campaign against overloading. He said that all such transporters have been directed and warned to immediately remove the extra seats from their vehicles. Otherwise not only the route permits and fitness certificates of such vehicles will be cancelled but the authorities will be constrained to impound the vehicles for overloading and violating other traffic rules. Official sources further said that besides the owners of the public transport, the transporters plying the private vehicles for commercial purposes have also been asked to refrain from bringing their vehicles on roads without the valid documents including route permit or the fitness certificates - so that the passengers could not face any inconvenience during journey during the course of the surprise checking of the vehicles on the highways. They said that all out stringent measures were being taken to ensure the comfortable and safe travelling to facilitate the passengers particularly children, elderly persons and women with the comfortable journey. The sources further said that only those vehicles will be granted the fitness certificates which will prove to be absolutely fit for comfortable travelling with the genuine seats entirely in accordance with the public transport rules. To a question, the sources said that during the ongoing campaign, police in all districts was extending fullest cooperation to the mobile squad of the AJK transport Authority to make the drive complete success. He said that traffic police staff has also been deputed with the mobile squad for surprise checking at various points on the highways in the district. To another question, the minister said over-loading and overcharging of fare by the public transporters will not be tolerated at any cost. He warned those involved in this unlawful exercise to desist from the illegal practice or be ready to face music in form of cancellation of route permits of their vehicles. The sources said that Secretary AJK Transport Authority Aftab Ahmed Mir, Secretary RTA Mirpur division AJK Adil Mahmood Khan and Assistant Secretary AJK Transport Authority Siraj Uddin have been directed to ensure complete adherence of the prevalent motor vehicle rules and regulations by the transporters in letter and spirit to ensure the safe and comfortable travelling facilities to the commuters.
