PESHAWAR - In order to oppose the military operations in tribal areas, the US drone strikes and displacement of people, a 'Loya Jirga will be held today (Monday) in Peshawar. The grand jirga, to be attended by political leadership, tribal elders from FATA , religio-political leadership, elders, ulema, representatives of journalists, human rights organisations and bar associations, will take place at Nishtar Hall. Formal proceedings of the gathering will commence at 10:00 am. The decision to hold the 'Loya Jirga was taken at All Parties Conference (APC) held under the auspices of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Fata chapter, at Almarkazi Islami on June 4. Talking to The Nation, the organisers said that all was set for holding the jirga adding that it was expected that the event would be attended bdy prominent leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Awami National Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Q, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl and Pakistan Peoples Party-Sherpao. They said the tribesmen had been passing through a critical phase of their life, as millions of innocent people were forced to become refugees in their own country just because of military operations in Fata . Holding of the jirga is aimed at expressing anguish over the US drone attacks in Fata and targeted killings, they said adding that the participants would call upon the government to immediately stop military operations in tribal areas.
