KARACHI - Police on Monday said it had arrested the murderer of an eighteen-year-old Zafir Fahim Zubairi, who had lost his life in a tragic incident at Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on Sunday.

The deceased, a first year student, was laid to rest at Defence’s Phase-I graveyard on Monday amid tears and sobs, while his funeral prayers were offered at Sultan Masjid.

A large number of people, including his friends and neighbours, were also present on the occasion.

Though no government figure attended the funeral prayers, leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Ali Zaidi and Imran Ismail did turn up.

Zafir had been killed while his friend Zaid was critically wounded when Khawar Burney, who is already in police’s custody, had opened indiscriminate fire at the victim’s car near Do Darya in DHA on Sunday morning.

Zafir and his friends were apparently trying to flee in their car after hitting and injuring a heavy bike rider at Phase VIII, DHA, when Burney and others chased them and opened indiscriminate fire at their car, killing Zafir shortly afterwards while critically wounding his friend. Two of his friends, however, remained unhurt in the incident.

The attackers, however, managed to escape from the scene; however, later police arrested them, including a prime suspect, Burney, during a raid at their residence at Allama Iqbal Road late Sunday evening and registered a case against Burney for killing Zafir and injuring his friend.

In his latest statement, although Burney has confessed to have committed the crime, but he has also tried to defend himself. “Yes, I opened the fire. But I had no intention to kill anyone. I just wanted to stop them by bursting their car’s tyres,” Burney told in his recent statement recorded to the police .

On the other hand, the heavy biker rider, Dr Rahim, who had been hit and wounded, also denied his relations with Burney. “Neither I know the victims nor do I know the attackers. I don’t have any relation with anyone,” he claimed in his video statement.

On the other hand, police officials continue to believe that Dr Rahim was with the suspects. “He had gone to the DHA for the bike racing. One black-coloured double cabin pickup van was also with him, which his security guard was driving and his security guard had also chased the car at that time,” said District South SSP Javed Akbar Riaz, and added, “We have also recovered Dr Rahim’s double cabin pickup and security guard’s shotgun. But we do not have any evidences that could suggest that the repeater had been used at that time.”

Zafir’s friends, who were with him at the time of incident, alleged that the assailants did not attempt to stop the car. “They had automatic weapons as well. They just opened indiscriminate fire at us instead of stopping us. The indiscriminate firing compelled us to speed up the car to save our lives,” Arham, one of the friends of the deceased, narrated the story in his video statement went viral on social media.
