A couple of months ago, Air Marshal Asghar Khan appeared on a TV channel and told us that the only way out of the present political crises is that President should call the Chief Justice of Pakistan and ask him to pick honest, upright people that could form a caretaker government for holding an election within three months. Most people had thought at the time that Air Marshal Sahib had gone bonkers or something. Now they think he was talking sense. Our political situation is getting worse by the day and something drastic is to be done to get out of this mess. Poor PM., it appears, is absolutely powerless; he recently asked his cabinet members to pay one month's salary in his IDP fund. Ministers agreed but asked in the same breath that they be given Rs 500,000 each to buy new furniture. The PM agreed. There are other stories of ministers' shenanigans, some un-reportable. People think the time has come for a midterm election to at least shut the mouths of the critics unhappy with the present situation. The PPP might actually win with a heavy mandate because it has deep roots in public. -COL (Retd) R.M. AKHTAR, Lahore, via e-mail, May 25.
