LAHORE - National selection committee member former opener Shoaib Mohammad has defended the selection of opener Salman Butt for the World Twenty20 Championship beginning in England from today. Talking to journalists here at the Gaddafi Stadium, he said that Salman Butt has been preferred in the team for his experience and he carries a huge burden of responsibility with him. "We still are faced with the opening pair problem and Salman is the one we can rely on at the moment. He can overcome his mistakes and come up to the expectations," he added. He further said that Pakistan along with India and South Africa are favourites for the T20 title. "During the previous World Cup T20 Pakistan was no where near the top teams but with good performance they made it to the final," he said. About Pakistan A team, Shoaib said that they have tried their utmost to give a chance to all the top performers of domestic cricket. "There are certain senior players in the selected lot of team but the team has not been finalized yet. The team will be picked keeping in mind the Australian conditions and the rival teams strengths," said the selection committee member. "The Australian A team have players like Shaun Tait and Cameron White so we would opt for a team which could handle the Australian pressure." He further said that the opening issue of the Pakistan team will soon be resolved. He also defended Shahid Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq saying that they are the players who could do anything in a match. "Fans still remember the previous World T20 Cup innings of Misbah," he said.
