LAHORE Expressing sorrow and grief over the assassination of former Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, the legislators from across the political divide condemned the incident during 20 minutes brief proceedings at the Punjab Assembly floor on Wednesday. The PPP ministers termed the assassination a political and not a religious murder while Law Minister Rana Sanaullah revealed that PML-N leadership would not attend funeral on the advice of senior minister. Soon after start of the assembly proceeding at 11:40 am, Deputy Speaker Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan expressed sorrow and grief over the assassination of Salmaan Taseer, saying the House expressed full sympathies with the bereaved family to bear this loss with fortitude. Senior Minister Raja Riaz said the killing of Salmaan Taseer was not religious but a political murder. He said PPP had a history of sacrifices and Salmaan Taseer was a fresh entry in the list of martyrs. Paying glowing tributes to Taseer, he said his services would be remembered for a long period of time. The gap created by his demise could not be filled, he said while urging the government to probe the matter and bring the real culprits to justice. He said PPP would continue its struggle for the betterment of the country and to strengthen the democracy. He said nothing could stop PPP from moving forward and continue its effort for the supremacy of law and the parliament. Finance Minister Tanveer Ashraf Kaira said the assassination of the former governor had deprived the party of a brave and courageous leader. He said the incident caused a huge blow to the party. This is the time to bring the real culprits to the task, he said while adding that killing by a security guard had left so many questions that should be answered. Dr Samia Amjad, on behalf of PML-Q, condemned and expressed sorrow and grief over the sad demise of Taseer. She stressed upon the need of constituting a high level committee to probe the incident. Condemning the brutal assassination of Salmaan Taseer, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah expressed sorrow and grief on behalf of his party leadership. He informed the house the PML-N leadership and the cabinet members wanted to participate in funeral prayers but the idea was dropped on the advice of senior minister. Raja Riaz tells us that the PPP workers are in a state of shock and participation of PML-N men in funeral can cause some bitterness, he said, adding 'we have decided to condole with the bereaved family after two or three days. After the speech of law minister, deputy speaker adjourned the session till 10 am on Friday (tomorrow).
