LAHORE- Aggrieved PPP leaders and workers buried assassinated Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer at a local graveyard on Wednesday afternoon with full state honour and sobbing eyes. Taseer was laid to rest in Shuhada Cemetery at Cavalry Ground near his residence in the presence of a number of party leaders, family members and relatives who stood in grief while his body, wrapped in the national flag, was lowered in the grave. A contingent of Punjab Police presented guard of honour to the late governor. Earlier, moving scenes were witnessed at his funeral prayer held at the Governors House. Distressed PPP activists were seen crying and chanting slogans against the Punjab government, as they blamed it for making inadequate security arrangements for the constitutional head of province. The absence of senior PML-N leaders at Taseers funeral was conspicuous. Even the Acting Punjab Governor Rana Muhammad Iqbal, who was present in the Governors House, was advised to stay away from the funeral prayer for fear of being attacked by angry jiyalas who were present there in large number. However, two PML-N ministers, Malik Nadeem Kamran and Haji Ehsanud Din Qureshi, participated in Taseers final prayers. Earlier, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah told Punjab Assembly that the chief minister had asked all the PML-N ministers and senior party office bearers to attend the funeral, but Punjab Senior Minister Raja Riaz advised us not to come as tempers are high and any untoward incident may take place. The funeral prayer of late Salmaan Taseer was attended by a large number of people from all walks of life including federal and provincial ministers, politicians, bureaucrats, judges, businessmen, lawyers, doctors, artists and people from the showbiz world. Allama Afzal Chishti of the PPP Ulema Wing led the funeral prayer. President Asif Ali Zardari sent a floral wreath to be laid on Taseers body and also sent his sister Faryal Talpur MNA to represent him in the last rituals. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Farooq H Naek, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Ch Ahmed Mukhtar, Babar Awan, Rehman Malik, Khurshid Shah, Sardar Aseff Ahmad Ali, Manzoor Wattoo, Jehangir Badr, Aitzaz Ahsan, Raja Riaz, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Arshad Ghurki, Sami Ullah Khan, Aurangzeb Burki, Dr Fakhruddin Ch, Asif Hashmi, Naveed Ch, Altaf Qureshi, Sajida Mir, Azma Bukhari, Faiza Malik, Dr Hasnaat Shah, Hafeez Malik, Asghar Gujjar, Haji Azizur Rehman Chan, Mushtaq Awan, Munir Ahmad Khan and Munawar Anjum were prominent on the occasion from amongst the PPP leaders. Ghulam Ahmed Bilour represented the ANP while Babar Ghauri and Haider Abbas Rizvi from the MQM were also present. Chaudhry Zaheeruddin Ahmad, Ch Shafaat Hussain and Amir Sultan Cheema of PML-Q and Omer Sarfraz Cheema and Ihsan Rasheed of PTI were also present at the final prayers. Former Punjab governors Mustafa Khar and Lt Gen, (r) Khalid Maqbool besides Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri and Mian Amer Mahmood were also part of the funeral prayer. Meanwhile, Rasme Qul of Salmaan Taseer will be held today (Thursday) in the Governors House at 2 pm which would be followed by dua at 2:30 pm.
