Wapda drub helpless Sindh Colours

ANISUDDIN KHAN KARACHI - Scoring a goal fractionally over every third minute, the defending champions Wapda scored ruthless 21-0 win over helpless Sindh Colours on the second day of the PIA 26th National Women's Hockey Championship here at the Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium under an azure sky on Wednesday afternoon. Wapda Captain Azra Nasir, who had scored eight goals including a double hat-trick in her team's 12-0 whitewash of Punjab Whites in the first round league match on the opening day of the 10-team championship, once again dominated scoring. She slammed nine goals to take her goal tally to 17 in two games. Nazia Rehmat added four goals and Rafia Qaiser, Nilma Hussain and Ishrat got two goals apiece while Amna and Uzma Lal scored one each to complete the scorecard for the winners. The gap between strong and weak teams in eight matches played so far in two days is vast. Wapda and Railways are the only teams in the competition who know hockey. Their playing 11 know the basic skills of hitting, passing and stopping on the fast astro-turf of the HCP. Other teams look novices before these two stronger outfits. In the meantime, a three-member selection committee has been named which will watch the matches and select probable for planned training camp. Former Olympians Iftikhar Syed, Jan Muhammad and Secretary PHF Women Wing Sandeela Amir Cheema are the members of the committee. In other matches of the day, Railways defeated Sindh Whites 5-0. Ayesha Bashir found the net thrice and Hina Kunwal added remaining two to the score. Army outplayed KPK 7-0 after leading 2-0 at half time. Shahida had three goals to her credit while Shamshad netted two. Ayesha and Sahil scored one goal each. Balochistan was at the receiving end when they lost to Punjab Colours who scored seven goals to nothing. Rashida Waheed and Muneeza scored twice each while Hina Pervez, Zareena, Shaheen and Ambreen had a goal each to their credit.
