KARACHI: Transport and Communication Department (TCD) of CDGK has failed to start drivers training program, planned two years ago in collaboration with Motorway police for preventing road accidents and abiding the driving rules. According to schedule, the training course for the drives was started in January, 2008, according to the planning and road safety, refresher courses were also be conducted, but so far it could not be materialised due to lethargy, an official of TCD said. It may be noted that fatal road accidents are daily routine in the city in which 2 to 3 persons lost their lives. Keeping in view the crucial situation of accidents and other problems, CDGK decided that massive Road Safety Education awareness campaign would be launched on electronic media by the end of December last year. The official also planed to telecast documentary film of maximum 6 to 7 minutes on various TV channels, to educate the road users about the importance of road safety, but this project is still delayed without any reason. Months back, a meeting of Traffic Management Cell was held under the chairmanship of DCO Karachi Javed Hanif, regarding launching of Road Safety Awareness Campaign to finalise the plan but no fruitful results were achieved, sources said. The road safety education programs for school-going children are being implemented for past several months, sources in the TCD confirmed. It is strange that CDGK is constructing dozens of pedestrian bridges on signal free corridors in order to facilitate the citizens especially women, children and old people, but showing negligence while materialising the programmes which were scheduled to launch last year. EDO TCD Iftikhar Qaimkhani could not be available for comments despite repeated attempts.
