Stalwart security

This is an open letter to the Chief Minister Punjab Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, and the reflection of unmannered treatment by the Police during our visit to Lahore. Owing to the recent blast in Jamia Naeemia, we were stopped by the police for identification. After checking the CNICs, they observed that we belonged to Quetta, and started asking different kinds of identification-related questions. Though we also showed our student cards. In short, after they found no evidence of our relation to any kind of insurgents, they threatened to hold us in custody. Finally, the Auto-driver, who was a local of Lahore, said they just wanted some amount, and we were compelled to grease their palm by paying Rs. 200. We were among dozens of strange visitors of Lahore who, though being innocent, were making unlawful payments to the police. Who is to be blamed? - ABID KAKAR, Quetta - via e-mail, July 4.
