The federal Minister for Water and Power, the namesake of our outgoing President Pervez Musharraf, is behaving like a professional gravedigger; at the behest of his masters, he has announced 'burying' of the Kalabagh dam yet again. It is ironic that every time Raja Pervez Ashraf tries to bury the casket of Kalabagh dam, an acute shortage of water and power resuscitates the demand of the dam project he has seemingly dumped for good. Consequently, people again start agitating with even greater urgency for the Kalabagh dam to be built posthaste. The proverbial 'Murda' is tearing at its coffin to stare at us questioning how could we bury a living entity underground when the ground reality of it is hitting us like a brick in the face to build not one but two dams. Kalabagh dam is the one out of these two, which could deliver us at the earliest from the darkness and thirst we are stricken with at present. -DR M. YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore, via e-mail, June 27.
