City sees peaceful Ashura

LAHORE The Youm-e-Ashur (10th of Muharram-ul-Harram) was observed with religious zeal and fervour in the provincial capital on Tuesday to commemorate the unparallel supreme sacrifices rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his handful companions, who laid their lives in Karbala (now in Iraq) for the rise and glory of the religion of peace and love, Islam. The faithful from across the City observed the day to commemorate the great sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), Hazrat Abbas (RA), Hazrat Ali Akbar (RA), Hazrat Ali Asghar (RA), Hazrat Qasim (RA) and their 72 devoted companions. The Citys main Zuljinnah procession emerged from Nisar Haveli in the Walled City on Monday night and culminated at Karbala Gamay Shah, outside Bhatti gate after Maghrib prayers, on Tuesday evening. Mourners offered Fajr prayers at Kotwali Chowk and moved towards Kashmiri Bazaar. The central processional passed through Dabbi Bazaar, Chowk Rang Mahal, Suha Bazaar, Paniwala Talab, Gali Dhobian, Said Mitta and Tehsil Bazaar, Mohallah Joggian and Unchi Masjid and appeared from Bhati Gate on Lower Mall and concluded at Karbala Gamay Shah where Sham-i-Ghareeban was organised. During each procession, the mourners were seen beating their chests to express their grief over the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), reciting nouhas and flagellating themselves with chains and later offered Zuh prayer. Several committees of devotees and social welfare organisations had set up sabeels and distributed Langar-e-Hussaini and 'Niaz (free food) among the people. The second biggest procession was taken out from Pando Street, Krishan Nagar (Islampura) attended by several hundreds of mourners. Dozens of small and large processions by mourners were also taken out from different parts of the City. Majalis-e-Aza were also held in various Imambargahs where ulema and zakirs highlighted the Karbala tragedy and the supremacy of Islam after sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his 72 companions. Majalis-e-Shaam-e-Ghariban were also held after Maghrib prayer in different Imambargahs including Karbala Gamay Shah, Idara Minhajul Hussain, Imam Bargah Qasr-e-Zainab and other places. The ulema and zakrin threw light on the brilliant aspects of sacrifice rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala. Earlier, the City Polices special squads comprising 12,000 security personnel including those deployed in plainclothes had sealed the entire route starting from Data Darbar till the end of Nasir Bagh including the complete area of Karbla Gamay Shah by making bumper-to-bumper parking of several containers escorted by heavy police contingents to guard the mourners. Furthermore, the City Police had also sealed each nook and corner and small streets leading towards the Karbla Gamay Shah. The similar security plan was implemented by each divisional SPs in his jurisdiction wherever the procession or Zuljinnah procession had to emerge. A good number of police contingents were escorting the main Zuljinah procession whereas the CCTV cameras were installed at various points alongside the procession routes while metal detectors and walk through gates were also used to scan the mourners. The management of each imambargah had deputed its own security men to assist the policemen to spot the unknown persons, and parking lots for all the majalis and Muharram processions were set up at a safer distance.
