Rawalpindi  - A division bench of Lahore High Court yesterday commuted the death sentence of a murder convict to life imprisonment on ground of lack of evidence.
The division bench of LHC Rawalpindi bench comprising Justice Qazi Amin Ahmed and Justice Raja Shahid Mehmood Abbasi took up the petition of Muhammad Asif filed through his lawyer Raja Ghaneem Abir Khan Advocate challenging his death sentence .
Gujar Khan Police arrested Asif in connection with murder of one Zia Nawaz occurred on 6/2/2008 and later a trial court convicted him in the murder case and awarded him capital punishment.
Arguing before the apex court, Raja Ghaneem stated that his client was innocent and had not committed murder. He added that the prosecution also failed to produce substantial evidence before the court; therefore, the death sentence should be undone.
After completion of arguments from both parties, the court commuted the death sentence of Asif to life imprisonment.
