ISLAMABAD - The treasury and the opposition are prepared for a showdown in the Lower House of the Parliament today as opposition parties would push for bringing Panama leaks at centre stage by suspending the routine agenda while the government would stress for going by it.

Parliamentary sources said that the opposition parties wanted to evolve consensus on terms of reference to determine the scope and limits of the proposed Judicial Commission for which they would press for suspending the routine agenda of the National Assembly. The session will continue till 23rd of this month.

“We want to make Panama Leaks and Terms of Reference (of judicial Commission) the centre stage of the session, how we will achieve this objective; it will be decided in Parliamentary Committee meeting called today before the session, said a top opposition leader.

According to a political elite, the strategy to include Panama Leaks in the session proceeding would be decided in the Parliamentary Committee meeting.

It could be walkout, chanting slogans, or anything which could compel the government benches to suspend usual proceedings and take up the Panama leaks matter, another opposition leader said.

Opposition leader in National Assembly, Khursheed Shah, has called a meeting of opposition parties at 3pm in his chamber where the course of action of opposition will be devised.

The government has put a heavy agenda for the session. On Monday two ordinance will be tabled while introduction of two bills, presentation of a report of standing committee, and discussion on use of illegal steroids by young body builders has been scheduled for discussion in today’s session.

Minister for Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatization Senator Ishaq Dar will lay the Credit Bureaus (Amendment) Ordinance, 2016 (II of 2016) before the National Assembly, while Khurram Dastagir , Minister for Commerce, will lay the State Life Insurance Corporation (Re-organization and Conversion) Ordinance, 2016.

Rana Hayat Khan, Chairman Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, will present the report of the Standing Committee on the Bill further to amend the Special Economic Zones Act, 2012, through Special Economic Zones (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Under Calling Attention Notice, law makers will discuss use of illegal steroids and prohibited drugs by the young bodybuilders.

According to the sources, the government will try to initiate dialogue with opposition on the matter of Panama leaks and TORs.

Ishaq Dar will invite opposition to make a committee and discuss the matter there and to allow session proceedings as per schedule, the government sources said.

The sources believe that after the start of NA session and some change of slogans and a heated debate the opposition will somehow agree on government offer and the proceedings will be resumed accordingly.
