KARACHI - Ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party on Monday announced three-day mourning over killings of seven people during attack on a rally led by MNA Nafisa Shah in Khairpur on Sunday.
The rally was organised by the local chapter of the PPP in support of controversial Local Government Law 2012 led by PPP leader MNA Nafisa Shah, daughter of Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah.
When PPP’s MNA Nafisa Shah was about to deliver her speech at the rally in Saddo Janvri village in Khairpur district, some unidentified arms culprits opened fire on the participants of the rally killing at least seven people, including a local journalist and a college professor.  PPP provincial general secretary Taj Haider in his statement announced three-day mourning over the sad incident, terming it an act of terrorism.
After the incident, the PPP workers got angered and asked the people to shut the markets in the Khairpur district. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, who is currently in the US, expressed grief and sought report of the incident from the IGP.
Qaim also announced compensation of Rs0.5 million for the legal heirs of victims and Rs0.2 million for the injured.
Meanwhile, Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro in his statement condemned the attack on the PPP’s rally and termed the act as barbarism and conspiracy against the democracy. Speaker Khuhro has urged the political forces to show their patience not to let the third party take benefit of the incident.
It may be noted that when the nationalists staging protests demonstrations against the controversial local government ordinance in various towns of the province, the PPP also planned such gatherings in support of the local government law to counter the nationalist parties.
The political analysts have expressed fear of any confrontation between the workers of PPP and the nationalist parties. They also advised both, nationalists and the PPP to keep vigilant and aware of such things as third party may take benefit of such politics of confrontation.
