I was shocked to hear the views of our eminent scientist Dr Samar Mubarakmand on a TV talk show; he said that the shortest timeframe for completing a large dam was 12 years. Probably this timeframe was perceived keeping in view Bhasha Dam, although both Kalabagh and Akhori Dams could be completed in six years or even less, which information was deliberately omitted from his talk. For replacing the existing oil fired boilers of thermal power plants by coal fired boilers, minimum time frame was given as three years, whereas this task could be completed on war footing in 6-12 months. Dr Samar Mubarakmand also mentioned that at Nandipur and Chichoki Mallian hydel power plants are being installed. This is incorrect, as approximately 500 MW power plants could not be installed on low head Upper Chenab Canal. Max 15-20 MW could be generated. For reader’s information, these two power plants are thermal, only they are being sited near the existing hydel plants. Such talk shows simply confuse the viewers instead of giving them correct information Dr Samar Mubarakmand is not a politician but a scientist and he should have given authentic information. There is only political point scoring by the participant and Dr Samar Mubarakmand came across as uninformed person who does not have Pakistan’s interest at heart, he only wants his pockets lined continuously by large payments made for coal research and his projects.ENGR.
