LAHORE- Punjab Olympic Association (PbOA) has decided to stay away from the so-called National Games being held later this month at Islamabad.
PbOA secretary Idrees Haider Khawaja said this at a news conference after a special general council meeting of the body held under the chairmanship of its Senior Vice President Iftikhar Ali Malik here on Tuesday. Idrees termed the National Games efforts to create confusion as the Games were already organised earlier this year under the banner of the POA. "There is no justification of holding an event which was already held and some quarters are making such efforts to promote parallelism and to put the future of Games in danger in the country,” he said.
"These Games are being held again by the interim committee without the approval of the POA. As such are illegal and against the rules and action will be taken against those individuals or associations which will take part in the bogus Games ,” he said.
The representatives from all the affiliated provincial sports associations attended the meeting which reposed full confidence in the leadership of PbOA president Syed Shahid Ali Shah.  Idrees said the house endorsed the action of Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) for imposing ban on Rana Mujahid Ali and Zafar Abbas Lak whereby they automatically lost affiliation and membership of the POA. "It was also decided that in future if the activities of any individual or association are found against the Olympic Charter and Olympic Movement as well as against the PbOA, action will be taken against such individual or association which may include disaffiliation from the membership of the Punjab Olympic Association,” he added.
The PbOA official said the sixth edition of Inter Schools and Inter Colleges Games will be held from November 1-5 at Lahore. The aim of holding of these games is to revive the sports culture in the educational institutions besides identifying fresh talent.  The house decided to award cash prizes to the position holders of the National Games . The gold, silver and bronze medal winners will be given Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively. The medal winners of team sports will be given Rs 3000 for gold and Rs 2000 each for silver and bronze medalists.
