Bumpy Fatima Jinnah Road needs repair

LAHORE Dilapidated condition of the Fatima Jinnah Road (Queens Road) has exposed the performance and tall claims of the provincial government regarding making the provincial capital a model city, a survey of the road conducted by TheNation revealed. The provincial government and the City District Government Lahore are ignoring the construction of some sections of such an important road of the city deliberately from about one decade due to unknown reasons. The day by day decaying condition of the road not only is causing massive nuisance for the commuters in general and the regular travelers in particular but also is causing frequent traffic jams on the road every day due to slow paced flow of traffic. The condition of a portion of the road, linking with The Mall is presenting picture of ruins due to apathy of the authorities concerned because they are neglecting and treating such an important road as it does not exist even on the map of the city. The road links some major roads of the City including The Mall, Lawrence Road, Mazang Road, Temple Road, Waris Road, Ferozpur Road and Jail Road from Qurtaba Chouk Mazang and is situated opposite of the Punjab Assembly. Moreover, the government is ignoring construction or surfacing of the road despite a number of very important government and private organisations are situated on this road including office of Capital City Police Officer, Red Crescent, a portion of Chief Ministers Secretariat, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Fatima Jinnah Medical College and others. Deep holes, uneven patchwork and open manholes at the portion of roads from Faisal Chowk to Lawrence Road Chowk and in front of the CCPO office are enough to expose the performance of the district management and show its efficiency whereas, such holes on the roads are also damaging the vehicles, plying on the road and are causing road accidents. Due to its decaying condition, the road presents picture of pond during the rainy season in particular and cause traffic jams Moreover, digging work on the road made by the police department for erecting security walls around the CCPO office is an other reason of the dilapidation of this about 100 meter long portion of the road while the unending construction work of security wall of CCPO Office still is continuing from last two years. Further, the police department is also creating hurdles for the daily commuters by erecting barricades, fences and cemented barriers on the name of security, which often cause traffic jams. On the other hand, an official of City District Government said on the request of anonymity that the police department is main hurdle in the construction of the road since the CCPO office was shifted in the building of Civil Lines Police Station. He said that the Road Department of City District Government sent request to CCPO for the construction of the road which was rejected for security concerns. Besides the above mention portion of the road, the CDG authorities left the remaining part of the road starting from Lawrence Road Chowk to Qurtaba Chowk in pathetic condition after digging road for laying sewerage pipelines, which multiplied the miseries of the commuters. In addition, the officials concerned of Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) and Road department of City District Government have no concrete reason even for justifying their position in this regard and clearing their point of view regarding construction of Fatima Jinnah Road whenever they were asked. They always seemed reluctant to address the issue.
