ISLAMABAD - The tug-of-war for holding of Azadi Show between the Presidency and PM House ended Tuesday when the Prime Minister cancelled the Independence Day Reception as part of government's 'austerity vows'. "Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has cancelled the 14th August reception in the wake of his drive to cut off expenses on various non-developmental activities," says a statement issued from the PM House. After the cancellation of Azadi Show by Prime Minister, now the grand gala would be held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr today (Wednesday). Presidential spokesman Major General Rashid Qureshi while confirming that the government had cancelled the Independence Day celebrations scheduled to be held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr told that the traditional musical gala would be held on the eve of Independence Day as per schedule. The traditional Azadi Show is held at the eve of Independence Day at Aiwan-e-Sadr but this year, a tug-of-war had developed between the President and the Prime Minister as both had written PTV to hold the event at Aiwan-e-Sadr and PM House respectively last month. In Azadi Show, renowned artists of the country perform national songs and present traditional dances but the main importance of the celebration is the accumulation of civil and military bureaucracy, apart from the participation of politicians and ambassadors of various countries. Major General Rashid Qureshi said that the decision to cancel the celebrations was solely the decision of the government. He said, "We will hold the celebrations at the Aiwan-e-Sadr with grace, simplicity and tradition." He said that invitation cards in this respect had been dispatched to the guests. When contacted, high-level officials of Information Ministry said that they had no information that Aiwan-e-Sadr was going to hold celebrations of Independence Day. PTV officials told TheNation that PTV would give full coverage to Azadi Show and there was no restriction on the organisation to downplay the function. Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid) lawmakers believe that President Pervez Musharraf is likely to make his final decision regarding impeachment move in Azadi Show function tonight in which country's bourgeoisie as well as diplomats would be present.
