Nawaz rejects US efforts for safe exit to Musharraf

ISLAMABAD - PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif has rejected US attempts seeking a safe exit for President Musharraf, hence dealing another blow to the beleaguered President who was already facing imminent impeachment. TheNation has learnt from authoritative sources that the PML-N leader has conveyed to the US authorities in categorical terms that only the Parliament was sovereign body to decide about the fate of President Musharraf.   According to the informed sources, these developments had taken place in the wake of reported contacts by President Musharraf requesting for the US diplomatic pressure to help steer him out from the imbroglio. Coalition government sources quoted former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who had met the US Ambassador to Pakistan Ms Ann W Paterson, as having expressed his deepest regrets to the US for his inability to prevail upon the entire Parliament. Nawaz Sharif is believed to have enlightened the US Ambassador that he had no personal grudge with Pervez Musharraf and had along with his entire family forgiven him for toppling his elected government on 12 Octovber, 1999. The PML-N leadership is understood to have also taken other coalition partners particularly the PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari into confidence on the US diplomatic efforts and he had endorsed the PML-N viewpoint that only the Parliament was sovereign authority to decide about the fate of President Musharraf. The PPP-led coalition government has announced to impeach President Pervez Musharraf should he fail to take fresh vote of confidence from the newly elected Parliament, thus taking by surprise President Musharraf and his political allies the PML-Q and MQM. In a related development, the coalition government has in principle decided to launch ruthless accountability of the previous rulers largely the PML-Q leaders soon after the process of impeachment against President Musharraf was completed. It has been learnt that bundles of documents are being secured through various sources relating to misdoings of the former rulers.         Meanwhile, the coalition government Tuesday claimed to have secured backing of 370 Members of the National Assembly as well as the Senate, who are willing to support the impeachment motion against President Musharraf. "We have got support of 370 MNAs and Senators to crown our impeachment move with success. This number could go up by the time the Parliament was put on notice for impeachment of President Musharraf", a PPP Federal Minister told TheNation. Staff Reporter from Lahore adds: There was strong rumour in the City on Tuesday that US Ambassador to Pakistan NW Peterson held an important meeting with PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif at Raiwind on Tuesday, but there was no official confirmation from any side in this regard. Sources in the PML-N, however, confirmed, though not on record, that Peterson met Nawaz Sharif and matters relating to impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf, ongoing military operation in tribal areas and current political situations were discussed at length. The US Ambassador reportedly stressed on providing safe passage to President Musharraf, while Nawaz Sarif told her that all the decisions would be taken by the Parliament in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people. According to PML-N sources, the Ambassador said that her country was committed to support democratic government in Pakistan and her country wished to see solid political system here.
