Karachi: five outlaws perish in shootouts

KARACHI - Five outlaws including target killers and Lyari gangsters were killed in three separate shootouts with law enforcers here on Sunday.
Two gangsters were killed in an alleged encounter jointly carried out by police and Rangers in Khadda Market, Lyari within the remits of Bhagdadi Police Station. The gangsters were killed when the LEAs retaliated to their fire during a raid. Their bodies were taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi for autopsies. Later, they were identified as Daud Memon and Asim Dada.
Police claimed the gangsters were involved in more than 20 cases of murder, kidnapping for ransom and extortion.
Separately, two suspects were killed in a shootout in Boat Basin area of Clifton. Police said the suspects were intercepted during snap checking but they tried to escape while resorting indiscriminate firing at the police, adding that in retaliation, the police team also opened fire, killing both the suspects.
Police said the suspects were involved in various cases of targeted killings and extortion. Their bodies were taken to morgue, Sohrab Goth, for identification after completing medico-legal formalities at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. In another encounter, an alleged kidnapper was killed when Citizens Police Liaison Committee, in collaboration with Anti-Violent Crime Cell, conducted a raid at a hideout at Gulshan-e-Mazdoor in Saeedabad, Baldia in a bid to recover an abductee from the kidnappers’ captivity.
The CPLC and AVCC officials said the raid was conducted to recover 17-year-old Habibullah who was kidnapped on June 28 in Maripur, adding the abductors had demanded Rs20 million as ransom money. They said that a kidnapper was killed and another arrested while two of their accomplices managed to flee under the cover of fire. The deceased kidnapper was identified as Amir Baloch and injured Malik Mehran, while Habibullah was recovered safely.
Meanwhile, two more suspects were arrested in injured condition after an exchange of fire with police in Slaughter House area in Baghdadi. They were identified as Hunain and Tanvir. Police said the accused were wanted in various cases of extortion and robberies.
Meanwhile, in a press statement, the Rangers’ spokesman said that Haider Baig, a wanted criminal was arrested from New Karachi owing to his involvement in target killings, and more than other 12 individuals. It is once again reiterated that Rangers would continue operations across the board.
Earlier, the MQM had claimed Baig’s affiliation with the party, and its leaders also visited his residence to express their sympathy with the family. The MQM also urged the people arrested during targeted operation should be produced before the courts and should not be subjected to brutal torture in the custody.
