MQM-P ‘not a puppet’ in establishment hands

Lahore - Sindh Rangers Director General Major General Muhammad Saeed has rejected allegations of political engineering in Karachi, following PSP Mustafa Kamal’s claim that he held talks with MQM-Pakistan at the behest of the establishment.

Talking to a private TV channel, Rangers DG said it was a wrong impression that Rangers had given any guidelines to a political party, rejecting the impression that Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan was just a puppet in establishment’s hands.

To endorse his point, he said, “There are cases against MQM-P leaders and we have not retreated a single inch on that.”

Major General Saeed however said “intelligence and Law Enforcement Agencies contact all stakeholders (political parties) for peace in Karachi”, adding that such contacts were a matter of routine since the Karachi Operation was launched in 2013.

He said Pak Sarzameen Party of Mustufa Kamal and MQM-P were in contact with each other for eight months. “It is now up to them (both parties) to do politics together or separately, there should not be violence in the city,” he added.

“Peace has been established in the port city after Karachi Operation with the sacrifices of LEAs and police, therefore, we do not want Karachi to return to the situation prevailing before September 2013.” Rangers DG added, “Rangers are working only for peace in Karachi.”

PSP chief Mustafa Kamal on Saturday said he held talks with the MQM at the establishment’s behest and added that it was MQM chief Farooq Sattar who, though establishment, sought merger of his party with PSP.

He said dozens of meeting between MQM and PSP were held over the past eight months where establishment acted as an arbitrator.

The former Karachi mayor said Kamran Tessori, Khawaja Izhar ul Hassan, Kanwar Naveed, Amir Khan, Waseem Akhtar Faisal Sabzwari and some other MQM leaders used to attend those meetings.

“Farooq Sattar told half lies. I will speak full truth. We did not invite Sattar for a meeting. Instead he was already present in the meeting with establishment when we reached there,” he said of the meeting that was said to have taken place at a “safe house”.

Kamal also said the MQM-P was formed in the room of former Sindh Rangers DG Bilal Akbar following August 22 speech of Altaf Hussain.
