MIRPUR (AJK) - The AJK Health authorities asserted that Iodine Deficiency had significantly been reduced from 76 percent to 48 percent over the past one decade (2001 to 2011) owing to the collective efforts made by the AJK Health Department and the Micronutrient Initiative Pakistan.
The claim was by Mirpur District Health Officer Dr Muhammad Bashir Chaudhry while speaking at a quiz show held at Government Girls High School C/4, Mirpur to assess the IQ (inner quest) level of the students here the other day.
Dr Ch, a seasoned medical expert, continued that the medical field was now fully able to prevent the fatal diseases of brain damage and learning disabilities among the children. The DO-H advised the communities to demand and use only iodized salt to save people from the disorders of the iodine deficiency.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr Zaffar Iqbal, Focal Person of the Universal Salt Iodization Programme, revealed that Micronutrient Initiative Pakistan was extending support to the AJK State Health Department for salt iodization and community mobilization activities. He underlined that the Health authorities were monitoring salt iodization at production, marketing and household level to ensure the availability of the iodized salt.
On the occasion, the District Officer Education extended gratitude to the Health Department and Micronutrient Initiative institution for holding the quiz show to ascertain the mental-quality-level of the schoolchildren. The DO-E emphasized the need for holding such competitions among the students in educational institutions across the state.
