PPP, PML-N foreign funding issue: PTI seeks more time to plead case in SC

PPP, PML-N foreign funding issue

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Wednesday sought more time to plead the appeals regarding foreign funds allegedly received by Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

PTI lawyer Faisal Chaudhry appeared before Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar in the chamber and requested for giving him more time for preparation of the case.

Earlier, a three-member bench on November 13 reserved the judgment on Hanif Abbasi’s petitions against PTI Chairman Imran Khan and General Secretary Jehangir Tareen. Besides challenging the offshore companies and assets of Imran and Tareen, the PML-N leader had also raised objection over PTI foreign funding in his petitions.

PTI leaders Shireen Mazari and Asad Umar had submitted the petitions through advocate Chaudhry Faisal wherein they have requested the apex court to direct the Election Commission of Pakistan to investigate the PPP and PML-N sources of funding and withdraw the election symbols allotted to them.

The SC registrar last month raising objections on their petitions of PTI MNAs Dr Shireen Mazari and Asad Umar had directed them to approach the relevant forums as these could not be filed under Article 184(3) of constitution. They then had filed the appeals against the registrar’s order.

The PTI leaders in their petitions requested the apex court to impose a ban on the PML-N for acting against the ‘integrity and sovereignty’ of Pakistan. They also sought disqualification of the PPP and PML-N chiefs who, they alleged, had submitted false certificates regarding their parties’ funds.

The petitions alleged that the PML-N and PPP have received funds from foreign and forbidden sources.

It further claimed that funds donated by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif were not mentioned in the details submitted by the PML-N to the ECP. According to the petition, Sharif had contributed Rs100 million to the party in funds. Later, he retrieved Rs40 million.

The requests also stated that the PPP and PML-N made funding agreements with private companies in the US. The petitions alleged that the PPP also secured funds through the Pakistan embassy.

The PTI itself is currently facing two separates cases in relation to receiving foreign funding; one before the SC and other before the ECP.
