KARACHI - Around 29 colleges in Sindh are working without Sanctioned Numbers of Employees (SNE) teachers because their SNEs are withheld in the province by the Sindh Finance Department, The Nation has learnt from information gathered by the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA). The principals and teachers are working on their assignment orders, that is why the strength of teachers are not proper and thousands of students are studying in these colleges and their future is at stake, according to the claim by SPLA. General Secretary SPLA Karachi Region Prof Iftikhar Azmi told The Nation that 16 colleges in Karachi, 10 in Hyderabad and three in Sukkur were working without permanent teachers. "In the current session more than 22,000 students were given admission against 18,000 seats only in Karachi under the Centralised Admission Policy (CAP), but the education department is still not serious in providing facilities of commerce teaching in colleges." He pointed out that such criminal negligence had exposed the government's negative policies towards college education. He said there were more than 15 colleges present in the province where commerce faculties were introduced due to the demand of the subject, but government had failed to provide commerce teachers in such colleges. He said, "Sixteen colleges which are without permanent teachers are situated in the metropolis, including Government Degree College, Gulistan-e-Johar; Govt Girls College, Gulistan-e-Johar; Govt College Quaid-e-Abad, Jogi Mor; Govt Girls College Sector Landhi; Govt Boys College, Korangi; Govt Boys College Baldia Town; Govt Girls College, Sector 7-C, Orangi Town; Govt Girls College Metro Ville; Govt Girls College, Mill Area, Landhi; Govt Degree Girls College, Qasba Colony; Govt Degree Boys College, Gulshan-e-Bihar; Govt Degree Girls College, Orangi Town, Sector 11; Shaheed Benazir Govt Girls College, Azam Basti; Dukhter-e-Mashriq Govt Girls College, Jamshed Road; Govt Degree Girls College, Mehmoodabad and Govt Degree College for Boys, KMC Store. Hyderabad region includes Govt Girls College Matiari; Govt Boys College, Nasirpur; Govt Boys College Qazi Ahmad; Govt Girls College Umer Kot; Govt Girls College KN Shah; Govt Girls College Mirpur Mathelo; Govt Girls College Mithi; Govt Boys College, Deplo; Govt Boys College Saeedabad and Govt Boys College, Daulatpur. In Sukkur region three colleges including Govt Girls College, Panu Aqil; Govt Girls College, Pir Jo Goth and Govt Girls College, Bozdar Wada are working without permanent teachers. Prof Azmi said that only 4,500 SNE teachers were engaged in academic activities out of total 7,500 SNE teachers in the province. "Around 3,036 positions of teachers in the province are vacant that is why students failed to get benefit from the teachers. "Despite repeated calls by this scribe, Secy Education Rizwan Memon was not available to comment.
