NEW YORK - An Afghan diplomat has been charged for severely beating his 22-year-old wife during a dispute at his residence in New York City's Queens area. Mohammed Fagirad, 30, a vice consul at the Afghanistan Consulate, maltreated his wife on Wednesday for several hours, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said. The diplomat is facing assault and larceny charges. Prosecutors say that Fagirad attacked his wife Wednesday morning, slapping her face repeatedly, hitting her with a belt and then pushing her down a flight of stairs. Prosecutors say he later on the same day again manhandled his wife. She suffered minor injuries.
