KARACHI - Promising youngster Saeed bin Nasir is in run along with a number of other aspirants for a slot in the Pakistan team middle order when the Patrons XI will meet Sri Lanka in the two-day warm-up game hereat the Soth End Ground today. Other promising batsmen who are expected to be seen in action in the 180 overs match are Bazid Khan, Asim Kamal, Bilal Khilji provided they get selected in the playing eleven. The 32-year-old Asim Kamal played his last of 12 tests in December 2005 in Bangalore, India and when he was included in the first test probable, the selectors were full of praise for left-handed batman. In the absence of Muhammad Yousuf, the middle order has created at void for a lucky and talented player. However, the two-day match is not an ideal game to asses a player's who prowess to impress for selection. According to information available here both the teams have agreed to evenly divide the playing time. Each team will bat for a day and bowl for a day. Allrounder Shahid Afridi who in recent times failed to impress particularly in the ODIs will be leading the home team and at the same time will be under selectors scrutiny who would be picking the team for first test starting here February 21 at the National Stadium. It's not only the batsman, but the medium pacers too - Muhammad Khalil, Wahab Riaz and Najaf Shah - would be closely watched in the warm-up. Sri Lankans which have just one game to test its new-comers and adjust to local conditions are also expected to try youngsters Tharanga Paranavitana who was picked from Lankan school cricket and medium pacer Suranga Lakmal. Sri Lankan skipper Mehala Jayawerdene has huge praise for these two and their potential would be assessed today. Lankan's would be also be testing the fitness of their pacer Chaminda Vaas who is expected to be visitor's main bowling weapon. In the meantime, Sri Lanka had their first feel of the test venue on Tuesday morning when they held a two-hour training session at the stadium. The Patrons XI also held a long training session at the South End Club where they have been lodged for the match. Located far from the hustle and bustle of the centre of the city, South End Club cricket ground outfield has sea sand base but it is firm and well rolled. However, the pitch has always been friendly to the batsman but if has been rolled tight to give good help to the pacers. The action in the warm up will start at 10 am. As the ground is close to the seashore the dew factor may delay the start of play on both the days.
