Trilateral summit of Pakistan , Iran and Afghanistan started here at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Friday morning to discuss the regional situation , prospects for peace and security and promote trade and economic ties. The summit hosted by President Asif Ali Zardari is being attended by President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai and President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. This the third round of trilateral summit that started in 2009 and efforts are being made by these three close neighbours and Muslim countries that the summit would prove to be an important milestone towards finding peace, stability and Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process. The three leaders, President Asif Ali Zardari, President Hamid Karzai and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who already met yesterday at the Aiwan-e-Sadr informally discussed the regional situation and agreed that they can ensure peace and security in the region with join efforts.
They are looking for broader cooperation and a regional solution to the Afghan crisis instead of imposing external solution.
Besides addressing the issue of terrorism, ensuring peace and security in the region, the three presidents will also discuss matters pertaining to cooperation in counter-terrorism, curbing transnational organized crime, including drug and human trafficking, and border management.
From Pakistan side Minister for Defence Ch Ahmad Mukhtar, Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Hafeez Sheikh and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani are attending the meeting.
