Jibran Nasir, a hero to many, spent some time with the law students at the Blackstone School of Law and engaged their minds through his personal journey to activism, both legal and political, and introduced Blackstone students to the idea of activism and it’s relationship with the rule of law.

A lawyer, politician and activist, Jibran talked at some length about his campaigns in Karachi, Islamabad and Kashmir and showed Blackstone students what it means to try to make a positive change in society. His personal sacrifices have gone unnoticed, and to his credit, he has refused to talk about them until now so as to ensure the conversation revolves around the issues he tries to bring attention to, rather than himself.

Being labeled, talked about unfavorably and even being threatened are some of the known prices he has paid for standing up to the monotony and silence our society has shown in face of some of the most depressing and heart wrenchingly sad events which have taken place in Pakistan this past decade. What, however, is less well known, is the strain his activism have put on his family and his friends. Having faced eviction and homelessness he spent more than a year on the couches of friends two to three weeks at a time but never wavered in his quest to stand up for those our leaders forget about. How can you not? was his sentiment, which is exactly what resonates with Blackstone, its people, its staff, and most importantly its students.

When asked what he took away from this impressive man, a Blackstone Law student answered, “Do not be scared. Do not be scared to stand up for what you believe in. Do not be scared to speak up for what you believe in. Do not be scared to speak up for someone else. Do not be scared to stand up for injustice. Do not be scared to support a cause which you believe in. And when one person shows fearlessness and stands up, another will too, and then three and then four and it is then that you start to change society for the better.”

Blackstone School of Law, a recent and innovative addition to the legal education field in Pakistan seeks to not only educate its students but also motivate them to work for the betterment of society and become conscious and ethical contributors to society. Using 21st century teaching methodologies, the students engage in research and critical thinking as part of their daily legal education.
