Govt wants to enhance tax net

KARACHI - Information Secretary of Pakistan Peoples Party, Fauzia Wahab has said that Value Added Tax (VAT) would be implemented with the consultation and assistance of traders community and government wanted to bring further 17 million people under tax net or documented economy. She was addressing members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Thursday. Leader of Businessmen Group Siraj Qassam Teli, KCCI President, Haji Muhammad, and others were also present on the occasion. She said that presently only 1.7 million were paying taxes. She said that VAT has been successfully implemented in 130 countries of the world and it is high time for Pakistan to expand its tax net and to document its economy. She said the government wanted to spread the tax net to manufactures and distributors. Fauzia Wahab also assured the trader community that government would take all necessary steps to halt the smuggling in the country.
