Multan-The Regional Police Officer (RPO) suspended on Monday a Station House Officer (SHO) and other cops for manhandling an elderly couple , who were protesting against illegal occupation of their land outside the Multan Development Authority.
Sources said that Punjab Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif took notice of police’s highhandedness when TV channels aired the footage of cops bundling up 75-year-old Nasim Bibi along with her husband into a police van. He directed the RPO to suspend the cops involved in the incident and initiate an inquiry.
The suspended SHO namely Ghulam Murtaza was appointed at Chehlyak police station. The RPO has appointed SP Legal Rana Muhammad Anwar Khan as inquiry officer while the CM has sought report from the CPO Multan.
The old woman and her husband were holding banners inscribed with slogans against MDA officials, claiming that an official of the MDA wants to grab their land. They alleged that they are being threatened by the people who want to occupy their land.
An MDA official namely Ikram Baloch approached the couple and snatched their banners while cops dragged the elderly couple on road. The video footage aired by TV channels showed the SHO publicly thrashing the couple .
