Pakistan Peoples Party and its allied parties have nominated Raja Parvez Ashraf as their joint candidate for the slot of the Prime Minister.
The announcement was made by Senior PPP leader Khurshid Shah while addressing a news conference along with leaders of coalition partners including Afrasiyaab Khattak of Awami National Party‚ Haider Abbas Rizvi of MQM and Sardar Bahadar Saharr of Pakistan Muslim League (Q) in Islamabad on Friday.
Ashraf has been dogged by allegations of corruption and controversy from his tenure as water and power minister. He served as information technology minister until the Supreme Court dismissed prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday.
Khurshid Shah said the allied parties of Pakistan Peoples Party had authorized Pakistan Peoples Party to nominate its candidate for the slot of the Prime Minister. We are thankful to them for the support of the coalition partners. He said the allied parties have always stood by Pakistan Peoples Party in the hour of trial for strengthening of democracy and supremacy of the parliament.
Describing the Supreme Court judgment on disqualification of Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani as a unique one in the country's history‚ Khurshid Shah said there was a perception that the government will resist the decision but the leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party and Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani once again proved that they accept and implement the decisions of the court. We did not follow the course of collision but for the sake of democracy and the system we accepted the decision.
Khurshid Shah asked the opposition parties to also demonstrate maturity in their conduct. He said it is a milestone in the country's history that the parliament elected by the people is completing its mandated tenure. He said this is an election year and the opposition should leave it on the people to judge our performance.
Talking to the media persons‚ Secretary Information Pakistan Peoples Party said Raja Parvez Ashraf is a seasoned and capable political leader and he deserved nomination for the slot of the Prime Minister.
He said Raja Parvez Ashraf led the party in difficult times and contributed greatly for the restoration of democracy in the country.
The next prime minister of Pakistan will be selected during the National Assembly session which has been convened today in the evening.
