ISLAMABAD – PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said instead of making prime ministers ‘scapegoats’, President Zardari should bring back Rs 6 billion from foreign accounts and spend the same on people’s welfare.
Speaking to mediamen here at the Punjab House, Sharif said, “How long will the prime ministers be made scapegoats ? Why don’t they bring back Rs 6 billion from Swiss bank accounts? Why do they keep on sacrificing the prime ministers?”
He said Gilani’s sacrifice was not for any noble cause but it was to cover up six billion rupees corruption money illegally deposited in the foreign banks.
He said the government was disrupting the entire democratic process by trying to cover up the money that was taken as ‘commissions and kickbacks’ by President Zardari . “Should a man like him be placed at such a post?” enquired Sharif.
Announcing nomination of Sardar Mehtaab Abbasi as party candidate for PM slot, Sharif said situation was rife to rid the country of the corrupt rulers who had no regard for the rule of law.
The PML-N Chief flayed the controversial steps taken by speaker of the National Assembly and a resolution adopted by the National Assembly against the Supreme Court decision.
“They said the Supreme Court’s decision was wrong. I say the Supreme Court has set precedence in Pakistan by taking such a decision.” The PML-N leader questioned why the parliament, even after being given a chance by the Supreme Court, did not take the right decision. “They said the Supreme Court’s decision was wrong,” said Sharif. “I say the Supreme Court has set precedence in Pakistan by taking such a decision.”
Earlier, he said, martial law was imposed to deal with such situations.
Sharif said the current rulers had inflicted innumerable sufferings on Pakistan and the sincerity, skill and intent needed to bring Pakistan out of these crises was not seen in government’s priorities.
“As a result,” he said, “The country is sinking deeper and deeper into crises.”
He outlined challenges faced by the country that he felt needed to be dealt with as soon as possible. The challenges, according to him, were restoring the country’s economy that has created unbearable inflation and unemployment, dealing with loadshedding, upholding the sovereignty of the law and resolving the deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan and Karachi.
He also put forth the idea of a foreign policy based on national interests, safeguarding interests of Pakistan and helping to take the country out of international isolation. The PML-N leader also confirmed Sardar Mehtab Abbasi as his party’s selected candidate for PM slot.
“This is a huge turning point. The country waits for change,” said Sharif. Sharif, speaking at a meeting of the PML-N parliamentary committee to select candidate for prime minister slot, said looters could never become political martyrs but would rather become political orphans.
He said that billions were being given in loans and the government had put the democratic process at stake.
Referring to Supreme Court’s verdict, he said the impression that Gilani had given of sacrificing for the rule of law was wrong.
