LAHORE - Waqt News successfully defended their cricket title as they routed Nawa-i-Waqt XI in the final like the previous edition of the Majid Niazmi Sports Gala 2017 here at the Cricket Centre ground, Model Town on Tuesday.

It was the third event of the ongoing sports gala for the staffers of the Nawa-i-Waqt Group, as earlier snooker and badminton events had been held. Six teams participated in cricket event including The Nation XI, Waqt News XI, Nawa-i-Waqt XI, Weekend XI, Nawa-i-Waqt Group XI and Nida-i-Millat XI. Two teams of veterans – The Nation Veterans and Nawa-i-Waqt Veterans - also played an exhibition match. The Nation Veterans was led by Editor The Nation Salim Bokhari while GM Marketing Bilal Butt captained Nawa-i-Waqt Veterans.

Former Pakistan Test captain and commentator Ramiz Raja, former Test leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmad and PHF secretary and legendry hockey player Shahbaz Senior also graced the event as chief guests while all the top officials of Nawa-i-Waqt Group, including Director Finance Azam Badar, Nadeem Siddiqui, Riaz Bhatti, Shafiq Sultan, Saeed Aasi and others, participated in the event to make it a success.

Waqt News were lucky to reach the final and defended their title as Nida-i-Millat XI defeated them in the very first match by 2 runs. The second match saw Weekend XI toppling The Nation XI by 19 runs to qualify for the semifinals while in third match, Nawa-i-Waqt XI beat Nawa-i-Waqt Group XI. Weekend, Nawa-i-Waqt and Nida-i-Millat directly qualified for the semifinals while to choose the fourth semifinalist, the qualifying match was played between the best losers Waqt XI and The Nation XI, which was won by Waqt XI by 19 runs. In the first semifinal, Nawa-i-Waqt XI defeated Weekend XI to qualify for the final second year in a row while Waqt News XI took the revenge of their earlier defeat at the hands of Nida-i-Millat XI to set final clash against Nawa-i-Waqt XI. Waqt News emerged as title winners.

The last event of the gala will be football event to be played on Saturday (November 25) here at the MTFA ground.
