ISLAMABAD - The Interior Ministry has forwarded a summary to the Law Ministry for further vetting seeking to register an FIR against Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and some other senior officers of the Punjab government for producing allegedly a fake intelligence report of murder plot of former Chief Justice Lahore High Court Khawaja Mohammad Sharif.
This is the third kind of important development in the ministry as Interior Minister Rehman Malik has already sent separate references of US $32 million money laundering cases against Sharif brothers to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Interior Minister had also directed Capital Police to reopen fresh inquiry against PM-N leaders Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif for their alleged involvement in Supreme Court attack case.
An official of the Ministry of Interior informed that the summary had been sent to the Law Ministry to seek its legal opinion whether a case can be registered against Chief Minister Punjab and other senior officers of Punjab government for producing a fake intelligence report in the light of the findings of an inquiry report of a three-member Judicial Commission notified by the federal government.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik while replying to a question of a reporter during his visit to National Press Club Islamabad on Tuesday admitted that his ministry had sent a summary to Law Ministry for further vetting to register an FIR but he said,” I will not say at this time against whom”. He also indicated that an FIR would be registered against an important person for preparing a fake reporter regarding plot to kill former Chief Justice LHC Khawaja Mohammad Sharif. He also said that he would uncover some things in a next week in this regard.
The federal government had formed the Commission on October 1, 2010, to verify the facts of a news report on the alleged plot. The commission comprised Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, Justice Imtiaz Ali and Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Justice Qazi Faez Isa as its chairman. The three-member Judicial Commission led by Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Justice Qazi Faez Isa had conducted probes on the authenticity of an intelligence repro prepared by Punjab Special Branch. The intelligence report had said that PPP senior leaders including Babar Awan had plotted to kill former Chief Justice LHC. The report had come into the limelight after it was disseminated through national press in 2010 by a senior officer of the Punjab government.
The Commission in its findings had stated that Punjab Special Branch Chief, Colonel Retired Ehsan-ur-Rehman, and Director Special Branch Shahid Mahmood, with the help of two special branch officials, had produced a fake and false intelligence report killing LHC Chief Justice. The Commission in its 150-page secret report had fixed the responsibility of the false report on Colonel Retired Ehsan-ur-Rehman, and Shahid Mahmood. The report had also proposed disciplinary action against Dr Tauqir Shah, Principal Secretary to CM Shahbaz Sharif recommending that he should not be given any important posting in the future. Prior to this, then director, Federal Investigation Agency, Zafar Ahmed had also conducted inquiry in the same case on the directions of Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Qureshi had also concluded in its inquiry report that the intelligence report was false.
