ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari Monday asked the government to upgrade the Gilgit airport, making it all-weather station to improve communication of the area with the rest of the country.He was talking to members of Gilgit-Baltistan Council at Aiwan-e-Sadr.  The members included Professor Ghulam Hussain Saleem, Wazir Ibadat, Muhammad Ibrahim, Amjad Hussain, Saeed Afzal and Maulana Attaullah Khan. GB Governor Pir Syed Karam Ali Shah and Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah, Presidential Spokesperson Farhatullah Babar, MNA Rukhsana Bangash and Secretary to President Malik Asif Hayat were also present.Developmental projects in GB and overall situation, especially the law and order situation, was discussed during the meeting.The president said that in line with the vision  of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who abolished FCR in Gilgit-Baltistan and introduced substantial administrative, judicial and political reforms, the present government accords a priority to the uplift of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.He said the government had taken substantive measures to involve the people of Gilgit-Baltistan in their socio-economic developmental process and their political empowerment.The president said that introduction of Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order 2009 was one such landmark achievements of the present government. He said that various developmental projects being undertaken by the Government such as upgrade of Raikot-Khunjrab section of KKH, realignment of KKH at Attabad Lake  and construction of Diamer-Bhasha Dam etc, would create jobs and other opportunities for the people of the area.
