LAHORE  -  Police Thursday claimed to have arrested six butchers over sale of dead meat in Nawan Kot.  The lawmen also seized 2000kg dead meat from the slaughterhouse near Bund Road. The police named the detainees as Shamshad, Salman, Rashid, Khalid, Iftikhar, and Zahid.  Police said a team acted on a tip-off and arrested the butchers from the slaughterhouse when they were trying to take the dead house to local restaurants.  The arrested collected dead meat from other districts and sell in local hotels and restaurants, cops said, adding that they were investigating the incident.

PFA action

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) continued a crackdown on untreated wastewater irrigated vegetables crops and discarded 2,524 Kanal of vegetables in  27 districts of the province, APP reported. According to a spokesman, food safety teams under the supervision of DG PFA Noorul Amin Mengal raided vegetables  fields across the province and also took action in the provincial capital's fields, and discarded 630 Kanal vegetables.

Sewerage, industrial waste and other poisonous water was being used for the cultivation of vegetables. PFA DG Noorul Amin Mengal informed the media that after mapping, the PFA had put fields of poisonous water in red zone and in these fields the department had banned to grow vegetables in these areas. The department was also taking help from SPARCO to find these fields and farmers were also being given awareness about the issue, he added.

This was the fourth phase of the crackdown and during three phases more than 20,000 Kanal vegetables have been discarded.

Two detained with spurious drugs

An FIA team team conducted a raid at Neelum Laboratories and Dawakhana Nawab Town on Raiwind Road h Thursday and seized a huge quantity of spurious drugs, manufactured under the garb of herbal medicines. According to FIA spokesman, about 51 different fake brands of tablets, capsules, syrups and powders were being manufactured and supplied to 2,000 medical stores across the country.

Manufacturing and packing machinery were recovered from the premises. Accused Mazhar Hashmi, the owner, and another person Khawaja Irfan were arrested. Further investigation is in progress.
