Body to devise plan to meet security threat

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the government would provide all necessary resources to the law enforcement agencies to enable them for dealing with acts of terrorism efficiently and give a sense of complete security to the people of Pakistan. He said this while chairing a meeting, specially called to review the overall security situation in the country, particularly the federal capital, here on Tuesday morning at PM Secretariat. The Prime Minister underscored the need for minimising the response time while dealing with such disasters. He said that standard operating procedures should be adopted for efficient handling of such challenging situations in future. Prime Minister Gilani said, "Islam is a faith of peace and forbearance". He also called upon the Ulema to project the true image of Islam to the general public and tell the people that such acts were not only against the spirit of Islam but also bring a bad name to the country. The Prime Minister constituted a Committee headed by the Adviser to Prime Minister on Interior, Rehman Malik. The Committee will thoroughly review the existing system of disaster management, identify shortcomings and suggest recommendations within three days, to check the security threats in future. Meanwhile, Advisor on Interior, Secretary Interior, IG Police Islamabad, DG FIA and DG ISI briefed the Prime Minister about the details of the Marriott Hotel blast. Former interior ministers Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao and Lt Gen Hamid Nawaz also attended the meeting on special invitation and suggested various measures to beef up security all over the country, particularly the federal capital. Other members of the Committee are Minister for Law and Justice, Farooq H Naek, Lt Gen (Retd) Hamid Nawaz Khan, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Secretary Interior, Secretary Foreign Affairs, Secretary Information, Corps Commander Rawalpindi, DG ISI, DG IB, DG FIA, Chairman, National Disaster Management Authority and IG Police, Islamabad. Acting Chairman Senate Jan Mohammad Jamali, Acting Speaker National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi, Minister for Law and Justice Farooq H Naek, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Secretary Defence, Corps Commander 10 Corps, Additional Secretary Ministry of Finance, Additional Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other senior officials of the ministries and attached departments also attended the meeting.
