KARACHI - Refuting the impression that operation was restricted to Lyari alone, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri has said that operation against criminals will be carried out across the city .
Addressing a hurriedly-called press conference at the Sindh Information Department here on Saturday, she said it was the desire of peaceful inhabitants of Lyari that stigma of criminals should be removed from their locality by rooting out criminals and extortionists.
“It is government’s priority to provide relief to Karachittes and for this purpose President Asif Ali Zardari has directed the provincial government to provide protection to the business community and the citizens and restore peace in the City ,” she added.
This operation is not against anybody but is being against criminals and extortionists who had made the lives of people miserable and causing harm to the economic activities in the city , she added. She said that there was a consensus among all the political parties for elimination of extortion and street crimes.
Recounting the four years achievements and performance of PPP-led government, Marri lashed out at the PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif for speaking lie on the Pakistan Day. She said that it was known to all and sundry that Mian brothers had escaped from the country, leaving the people at the mercy of dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf.
Marri said that by distributing laptops among the students, Mian brothers could not hoodwink the people who knew that money from public exchequer was being spent on these laptops. “This is not a time for photo session as people want pragmatic steps that could ameliorate their lot, he added.
She claimed that Sindh government had taken concrete steps for the betterment of people during its four years. Rupees 414 billion has been allocated for development, Rs12 billion invested for Waseela-e-Haq Programme which will help provide relief to the poor. To root out unemployment, Sindh government had distributed 3,000 rickshaws among the unemployed deserving people out of which 500 were distributed among the residents of Lyari.
She claimed that establishment of Sindh Bank was the biggest achievement of Sindh government. “It is now on the path of progress and in one year it has earned a profit of Rs1.1 billion. Presently 50 branches of Sindh Bank have been established all over the country and this year its branch network would be increased to 1,000.”
Besides providing job opportunities to the graduate youth, 25 percent jobs would be given to womenfolk, he added.
