KARACHI All is set to hold fifth General Assembly of World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP), scheduled on April 27-30, 2011 in the metropolis. Some 44 delegates, including 22 females hailing from 17 countries, representing different organisations of fisher people are expected to participate in this event. Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) is hosting the WFFP General Assembly. PFF has designed various colourful activities on the occasion, which include Sufi music, cultural events and social gathering with the fisher community. On April 29, 2011, to show strength, hundreds of fishermen, farmers and oppressed communities will join the colourful rally, which will culminate in front of Karachi Press Club. Local and the foreign delegates will lead the rally to express solidarity with the world fishermen. The WFFP is an international alliance of 36 mass-based organizations of fishers working in 32 countries of all the continents of world, and it claims to have four million members in the world, struggling for rights in their respective countries. The alliance aims to protect the rights of communities that depend on fishing for their livelihood, represents the small scale, artisanal fishers interest at the international level and plays the role of global political organ of the same communities. General Assembly of WFFP is organized after every three years as per its constitution. Earlier, WFFPs four constituent general assembly meetings had been held at Delhi, India; Loctudy, France; Kismu, Kenya and Negombo, Sri Lanka respectively. It ensures democratic functioning, elections for the new office-bearers, planning out for the global common agenda for the artisanal and small scale fisher communities. Major objectives of the meeting include discussing the issues of fishermen of these countries and decide how to address the same jointly. They will also discuss to recognize, support and enhance the role of women in the social, economic, political and cultural life of the fishing community.
