Gas-starved dwellers vent out frustration

MIRPUR (AJK) - Hundreds of the dwellers of thickly populated Mian Muhammad Town, a locality of Mirpur City, Monday blocked the highway passing through the town by staging a sit-in to press the AJK government for early acceptance of the long-cherished demand for the supply of the sui gas to Mian Muhammad Town. Led by the elders of area Muhammad Ramzan Chughtai, President AJKCUJ, Arshad Mahmood Butt, former President Kashmir Press Club, Ch. Muhammad Yasin Advocate, Khawaja Muhammad Iqbal and the series of former like-minded councillors from the area, a large number of the inhabitants thronged Mian Muhammad Road - linking Mirpur city to the historic town of Khari Sharif, Chachian, embedding the mausoleums of eminent mystic poet of the sub continent Mian Muhammad Buksh (RA) and spiritual leader and the preacher of Islam Baba Peera Shah Ghazi (RA). The furious protestors set ablaze tyres to block the traffic which was diverted by the administration to the alternative link roads for the facility of the passengers. The mob brought out procession holding placards and banners bearing slogans for early supply of the natural gas to Mian Muhammad town, from where the main natural gas supply lines was passing through for benefiting only few posh sectors of Mirpur city of the natural gas. Key speakers including Ramzan Chughtai, Ch. Yasin Advocate and Arshad Butt accused the AJK government of adopting delaying tactics in this regard. They pointed out that despite passage of several weeks, the AJK government could not manage the signing of a formal agreement between Mirpur Development Authority (MDA) and Sui Natural Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL). Speakers called for immediate signing of the agreement between the two institutions to ensure early supply of the natural gas to Mian Muhammad town and rest of the gas-neglected residential areas of Mirpur city. Speakers pointed out that the city population including the inmates of Mian Muhammad town were anxiously waiting the natural gas since over last nine years. The gas to a tiny portion of Mirpur city was supplied on September 30, in 2002. And since then, the population of rest of the city areas were raising hue and cry for the early supply of natural gas to the gas-deprived areas. Deputy Commissioner Mirpur Muhammad Tayyeb, SSP Sardar Gulfraz Khan, rushed the scene to quell the situation. He informed the mob about the arrival of the formal agreement between the MDA and SNGPL any time during next couple of days. The DC told this correspondent on this occasion that the law ministry of AJK government has made wet the draft of the agreement on Rs167 million plan between the two institutions for supply of sui gas to Mirpur in the coming days. The agreement, he revealed, is likely to be signed at Kashmir House in Islamabad between MDA and the SNGPL in the presence of AJK Prime Minister Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan and other concerned senior officials of the AJK government.
