COLOGNE (AFP) - Supporters of Bundesliga strugglers Cologne made death threats to the players after their thumping 4-1 weekend loss at Wolfsburg which left the once proud side just two places off relegation. Several fans burst into the club's training complex early Monday and brandished a banner some 20 metres long bearing the legend "if you go down we'll kill you." Cologne 's loss was their third in a row and left the club, who appeared to be climbing the table after a run of seven straight home wins just before this latest poor run, in 14th place. Wolfsburg themselves are 16th, just three points further back, and currently would have to face a relegation/promotion playoff against the third side in the second division. "I cannot understand how so-called supporters can do such things," Cologne skipper Lukas Podolski told the online version of mass daily Bild. "I am shocked - that's nothing to do with football," said coach Frank Schaefer, whose decision to quit at the end of the season has also angered fans.
