Dr Fareeha Khanum has ridiculed Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari for their royal lifestyle (Aug 12). Both are moneyed people, one a big industrialist and the other a big landlord. Even Quaid-e-Azam, who was a very successful lawyer, lived in a regal manner. He, nevertheless, served the poor. I am all for austerity at all levels, but we must remember that even if we make all of the two percent rich people poor, which the PPP government is bent upon doing, the 98 percent poor people will not become rich. The poor will become less poor only when industry and agriculture flourish to provide jobs. We need to increase productivity, increase exports, reduce prices, improve availability of goods and so on to make life better for the poor. Too bad industry does not have enough power and agriculture does not have enough water. All roads of our salvation, thus, lead to Kalabagh dam. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, via e-mail, August 15.
