KARACHI - Zohaib Asif won the second edition of Sindh Governors amateur title in the 36 hole competition played at his own DHA club but it was young and promising Ali Sher who stole the show with the rare hole in one feat on the first day of the two-day event that concluded here on Sunday. Zohaib Asif piped Ali Sher a find of Sindh Golf Association talent hunt programme at the post by one stroke when he shot 73 on the second and the final day with Ali Sher second time registering two over 74 on the final day. Both the players had tied at two over 74 on first day. Ali Sher who train at the calmer Karachi Golf Club located in the heart of the city had some difficulty in keeping his drives on the fairways due to high wind condition. Zohaib Asif, who plays and train at the wind, swept newly-laid DHA course. He handled the wind factor better than his superior opponent Ali Sher who caught the attention of the golfing community for his hole in one feat. Ali Sher recorded the feat on 165 yards par three hole 14 to the glee of SGA President of the SGA Aslam R Khan and the SGA secretary Asad I A Khan who had picked Ali Asghar from the talent hunt scheme programme. SGA gave special cash prize ward of Rs 10,000 to Ali Sher for his performance. The SGA under its talent hunt scheme launched three years ago had selected talented Ali Sher along with some other talented players. SGA has picked promising youngsters mostly sons of the professional players to train them as future champions. Each selected player in the talent hunt programme is also being paid a monthly stipend of Rs 5000. When the scheme was lunched, the PGF was also contributing some amount towards the stipend but last year the federation had stopped payment of its share. But the SGA with its own resources is still paying the monthly honorarium to encourage the players. Former national champion Murtaza Ali Qasim who ruled the amateur waves in sixties won the seniors eighteen whole competitions for 0-9 category with a total of 84. Shahid Ismail with total of 99 won the ladies 18 hole competition. Six ladies registered for the competition which was played in strong windy condition.
